a grand chapter!

Post by Elizabeth Helen Drake »

This is the single best argument that this book of yours needs to be on every high school library shelf in the United States. Put me on your list Mark C for the " Library Project"

You know you amaze me Paul !but I should come to expect this!

You have always said that this was your strong suit, being able to tell a very complicated story without getting bogged down in confusion. This is clear, precise, engaging! Its all the things that make terrific reading and a person reading this material actually learns without having their head explode at the same time. I guess that you have done that for all of us huh?

And of course during the whole chapter I was thinking ..... and what is Townsend Brown doing? You KNOW folks that he is up to something! And now he is out of the Navy .... and living in California ...... writing something as grand as " The Structure of Space" and frankly I just can't wait for the next chapter. Elizabeth

Let's see, ....... wasn't his daughter born in 1945? Must have been doing something. <g>

Reading the chapter I noticed you metioned Heisenberg. Has anyone ever read "National Socialism and Science" that was written by Stark? He was a Nobel Prize winner and referred to Heisenberg as a "White Jew" and even more so Albert Einstein. He totally despised Jews and "their" science and claimed that they had no real talent. A real Nazi to say the least. I believe he was imprisoned after the war but I am not sure.

I hope the above reenforces a bit.

As Boston said, " I think you got it ".

Hi Paul:

Excellent work on the differentiation of goals in the world of physics during this era. I would suggest that anyone wishing to be entertained with a fictionalized version of Allied scientist-snoops rushing about Europe at the end of WWII looking for stuff the Nazis had been hiding, not delay in obtaining a copy of Thomas Pynchon's book, Gravity's Rainbow.

The Allied snoops, mostly American along with the participation of corporate entities such as General Electric, were very interested with what they found at Nordhausen where V-1's and V-2's were being built by slave labor in vast underground tunnel complexes.

Oh...and as you probably already know, Einstein's letter to FDR was mainly instigated through the efforts of Leo Szilard, a Columbia Physicist from Hungary who also ended up working with Fermi at Chicago and at Los Alamos on the bomb project..

And Boston would also say

Post by twigsnapper »

You are right Mikado. He has got it .

And I believe that Boston would also say (being always appreciative of a good fast colt with plenty of talent and stamina) ....... leaning on the rail watching one of those early morning workouts ..... what would he yell out as instructions watching the colt breeze past?....... "go on, go on! "

Gravitys Rainbow

Post by twigsnapper »

Pynchon had much to say Flo, but that was 1973

A quote from him was " A screaming comes across the sky"

And again the Rainbow reference. twigsnapper

Szilard

Yes, I am aware that "Einstein's letter" was actually written at Szillard's behest, and, in fact, I think the link that I put in the text goes to a page that says as much. I just couldn't figure out how to add that particular detail without going off on too much of a tangent. I'm probably guilty of the same "celebrity deference" that prompted Szilard in the first place, i.e. "it'll have more impact coming from a celebrity like Einstein..."

Maybe I can fix that in the re-write. I do like to give credit where it's due... (boy, there's an understatement...)

gone are the days

Post by Victoria Steele »

Boy! gone are the days when I got to be first to reply to your chapters! But that pleases me too!

So I am jumping ahead because I know that what you are doing here is setting up for the next chapter! So can I guess?

Looking to the sky! Something not atomic and not involved with rocketry because that never was really Townsend Browns big thing. Something in the sky has to be a UFO or a flying saucer? but the "Adamski type flying saucers didn't show up until the fifties I think ............. so ......... going back to Nick Cook. What was showing up over the skies of Germany near the end of the war? Something strange and in line with Townsend Browns interest and what we have been talking about all this time?

I think that I know where Paul is going with this but so far until he confirms it with the next chapter .... this is just my wild theory!

Whatever it was " showing up in the skies" was something BOTH sides noted. Each side thought it belonged to the other. Just taking Nick Cooks book to heart and watching where Paul is going here ...... I would say ...... mysterious objects that others called " Foo Fighters".

They were bright lights that seemed to track the bombers but they did other things too so they can't have been what was once called " St. Elmos fire" that used to show up during electrical storms around the masts of ships. No, these things were different and they scared the crap out of bomber crews who reported them frequently. But these things just followed along. There were no reports of any agressive behavior to my knowledge but I could be wrong. I think thats what was being noticed over the skies of Germany. Am I right Paul? Or have I let the cat out of the bag? So .... I could be wrong. But you yourself have said that Dr. Brown spent time in Germany and Mr. twigsnapper too ....... so what else would draw Dr. Brown there? Victoria

remember all the fronts

Post by twigsnapper »

Remember when you read this history that there were many fronts to this war. The fronts that you could see and that were reported on daily and the fronts that were invisible.

Remember that before the Americans were brought into the war by the attack at Pearl harbor the British Security Coordination had set up secret camps in Canada to train agents which would be working behind the lines in France and Germany. Some American agents were trained ( while their own country was against such goings on, of course, before the attack) Camp X was expert in supplying forged documents and even buttons sewn on uniforms properly for whatever province these would be "spies" were going to be sent.

I think that we may have mentioned HYDRA which was the very powerful radio station there at camp X. One of the things that was most important to Hydra was being able to supply information to the network overseas drawn from intelligence gathered from SOVIET agents working there in the United States. There were at the time illegal covert transmissions being sent to the Soviets from the United States, Canada and even the Bahamas. The Soviet Embassy in Canada came under particular scutiny by Stephensons codebreakers.

Stephensons group came to be known as the National Research Council. Of course they were mainly interested in Nazi and Japanese broadcasts but came eventually to realize that the Soviets were extremely active and were going to present a real threat in the future. So they zeroed in on evesdropping on whatever was being sent from Canada or the US to the Soviets. One of these men was an amazing and talented man by the name of Beau Kitselman.

Anybody else out there who can add to this? twigsnapper

Mr. Twigsnapper, uh,,,, what is it that I have?

Let's see, I have ideas, I have gained some weight in the last two years, I have lost more hair, I have turned more grey, I have lost money on the market, I terminated one lawsuit only to contemplate another but I still can't fathom what it is that I "got".

Mr. Twigsnapper, I was wondering if you've ever run across a few stromg woman leaders like Margie Thacher? Or how about Madingham Buller? These were no doubt some of the finest example of feminine leadership.
Have you notice anything of this type of "Feminine Leadership" beginning to materialize as a probable future in the United states?

Now that one of our female astronauts was arrested for murder and we just lost Anna Nichol Smith, we need better role models for the young girls reaching puberty, don't you think?

birthday girls and dancing shoes

Post by twigsnapper »

Have I run across a few strong women? Son, there isn't time enough to tell you.

I am still having a hard time living down a certain London birthday party and some dancing shoes. And strong ladies do not forget. Lady grady can probably attest to that.

But can I see into the political future of the United States? No. And I am not sure that I would want to. Perhaps Jimmy Buffett said it best when he sang the words to his song " Only Time Will Tell"

There are still others out there, though decidedly and maybe sadly, are not quite as terrifying. twigsnapper

quoting knights and castles

Post by twigsnapper »

Bulwark,
Sorry, I misdirected an answer meant for you and in the doing of it confused our Mikado. What else is new in my life I guess. Sorry, I didn't mean to slight you.

So, how old were you when you stole that car? Just wondering what similarities there might have been between us. I get the impression that you were just a bored American kid. Me? I was too busy just trying to stay alive to be bored but I have a feeling that I might have had a nastier nature all told. You are far too poetic to be that nasty.

Mikado,

Sorry I confused you. But it was interesting to see your response.
What was it that you "got?" .... Ideas? me too! Gained some weight, alas me too! turned more grey, well yes that too, lost money on the stock market? well thats whats supposed to happen. Things go up and down and you just have to ride out the storm and sit chilly as horsemen might say.

LindaB, I hope that you follow through with your plans to take some time away for yourself. I could tell from your recent posts that your job is getting to you a little bit. A UFO convention? Not my first choice, but I am sure you will have fun. I understand that Steven Greer is going to be there. Richard Dolan too again. Go to enough of those things and all the faces keep showing up over and over. You will be known as the lady with the white rose! Interesting to hear your reaction to Greers personality..

and Paul,
I really liked the shot of your desk and I assume that these are the books that have worked their way up from your floor! And as everything there are things unseen but there. For every castle there is a knight on a grey horse. Nice to see it and know its there. The von Luck story is very interesting. Probably the most overqualified hotel desk clerk in the world, excellent horseman and a good honorable man. I found out years later that the little girl lost in the mud for me was with a group of civilians which were shadowing his tanks. She must have been a casualty of it all. He and I talked about her years later. He had worried but there were thousands of people. Still that little girl will be mentioned in history, I hope.

twigsnapper,

Am I in good company in being confused or if I've been slighted, how bad? I suppose bad is an Einsteinian thing, you know, relative.

I was full of **** (urine) and vinegar and newly released from the drudgery of daily servitude in pursuit of that trophy known as a diploma, in fact, it was the very same night. Ah the lure of the party and a place to do it, a friends brothers car and a companion that comes six at a time. The brother didn't like us taking his Super Bee with the newly rebuilt 383. Of course, I received the bracelets and the brother didn't, you know, a family thing.

I grew up without a father around much and pawned a few things for that extra gold, if you catch my drift. Had a few bones broke and a few bloody mouths to boot.

There are times we cross that double yellow line riding that hog and the thrill of watching life coming at us but at some point, if we are lucky, we cross back over in time and watch the black scythe knick our brow and live to see the light.
