Townsend Brown and Floyd Odlum

Townsend Brown and Floyd Odlum

Post by Elizabeth Helen Drake »

I thought that Victorias post was so excellent that it actually opened up a whole new post site. So starting again with her wonderful information on the very influential Mr. Floyd Odlum.

viewtopic.php?p=2699#2699

I did want to add one thing to this information. It was a coincidence, maybe. When I read that Mr. Odlum had pulled his money out of the stock market into a cash position before the crash, I thought, Where have I heard that before? Then I realized that is what Mr. Eldridge Johnson did exactly that too, and thats what made him the fabulously wealthy man that he became. Perhaps just coincidence and good business sense. Perhaps it was foresight.

Anyway. Here is the post area for information or wild thoughts on Mr. Odlum. Thanks Victoria for such an excellent start into looking at the life of Mr. Odlum and his connections with Dr. Brown. Its always good to do the homework before class opens again and with Paul being away this is sort of what it feels like to me.

One other comment about Mr. Odlum. He helped Amelia Earhart finance her flights and Amelia and Floyds wife Jackie Cochran were very good friends. It was rumored that Jackie, (amongst her other great talents, was what they call now a "remote viewer" and claimed that she knew where the downed fliers plane was. Of course, as influential as she was, that was something no one was prepared to listen to in those years.) I understand that Floyd adored his wife and was extremely proud of her flying abilities and her ability to stand toe to toe with even the most abrasive military types.

During the spring of 1967 Dr. Brown spent a couple of months in the Indio area , meeting Mr. Odlum nearly on a daily basis. This is all part of the story that Paul has yet to unfold. Trust me. Its interesting. Elizabeth

Caution still due on issues

Post by Trickfox »

Oh Elizabeth
There is just so much more left for our friends and visitors to read and catch up on. I'm sure there will be plenty more to come when Paul gets back. In the mean time I have plenty of homework to do in Malton, and at the local library where I've founds records of the Globe and Mail dating back to the early 20s.
I understand exactly why I'm involved on this side of things and it is most obvious that we speak from a global perspective here. I find it interesting that the Caroline Group was so open minded enough to work with conservatives all over the planet, while they secretly befriended liberal new ideas and the progressive, modern thinkers who were behind all the booming industries. After all, we are talking about exceptionally talented individuals who also had an acute value system which we are now discovering to be quite refreshing. Obviously these individuals were also fearlessly patriotic citizens of their respective countries with a clearly defined goal of avoiding complete self anilation as a species. Don't you get the impression this urgent part of the past is still quite relevent today as well?

the word urgent

Post by Elizabeth Helen Drake »

Trickfox,

The fact that you chose the word "urgent" in your last message was interesting to me and struck a chord.

And I do miss Paul in these discussions because he is better able to explain his side of our exchange about that word. He had quite a few levels of definition to it, as I recall. His translation of the word had several levels to it and he made alot of sense with his stand. I unfortunately have only one. When someone says URGENT to me I guess I take that person seriously on only one. Here we go with English language again. Urgent to one person does not mean the same thing to another. Elizabeth

yoohoo in the dunes

Post by twigsnapper »

I wasn't going to elaborate on this story, though I have touched on it before, I think. Someone had mentioned the fact that Dr. Brown was a nudist and enjoyed sunbathing (was that you Neenie?) and I may have mentioned that the rule around Dr. Brown was that you were to "Yoohoo!!!" loudly when you were about to invade his privacy. You know, give the chap a chance to reach for his towel!. And that was very much the rule of the day. I think I may have mentioned that there was an occasion where there were a couple of Generals "Yoohooing" across the sand dunes once. I didn't elaborate on that because I didn't think it appropriate but now that the subject of Floyd Odlum has reached the surface I would like to continue this story.

It was April 1967 and the Brown family was living in a bungalow on the North Shore of the Salton Sea. Now, how many of you know that area? I am sure that Linda Brown at the time must have felt that her father had taken her to the very end of civilization. It was beginning to get warm, as that area tends to as summer approaches. The family would have dinner at a place called a "sailing club" every evening but it was hardly the Corinthian. I am saying this to prove to you that I was there and "on duty"

At one point during these meetings Dr. Brown took a break and headed for a remote area he had scoped out. It had a natural spring and date palms and he thought it charming. And no one knew about it , which pleased him. It was bordered by a series of sand dunes and was not visible from many directions. So it was that when the conferences slowed down he was prone to head off into those hills to this special place and I was the only one who knew where he was, or was anywhere in the vicinity.

At one point though Mr. Odlum decided that he had to talk to Dr. Brown again over some point. He chose two messengers to "Find Brown". And thats how it came to pass that two Generals of the United States Air Force huffed and puffed and "yoohooed" across some sand dunes in Southern California. One of them was the (as Paul puts it) the "bombastic General Curtis LeMay, the fellow that wanted to bomb Cuba just a few years earlier.

Now I tell you this long story because those two men were acting as messenger boys for Floyd Odlum. If I had tried to tell you about this event earlier, without his position and power more evident, you would not have believed me.

So between the lightbulb changing and the yoohooing General LeMay was a busy man that summer. Twigsnapper

there?

Post by Elizabeth Helen Drake »

Mr. Twigsnapper.

I had not known that you were "with the family" during that span of time.(April of 1967) Can you tell us more about that experience? When had you joined them? Was Josephine aware of your position? And Linda? Was she totally unaware of all of this? Those "business meetings" that she remembers, were you there at those conferences also? She reported being fascinated by all the military "brass" and I have it in my notes that she had said she attended a luncheon where she had a "general on her right hand side, and a general to her left". So , were you there too? And if so, what can you tell us about those meetings? And in what capacity????

May I ask, because now you have uncorked a WHOLE LOT of questions on my part. When was it that you joined up with Dr. Brown again and what was it that prompted your participation? Were you there again as his "armed escort" as you had been in London and Paris in 1956? Had your position changed at all? I have sensed that you were not exactly the type to be stuck in a "dead end job" (forgive me, it goes with the company I keep) so besides your initial protective role, was there something else going on with you? or am I overstepping my bounds here? At what point now will Linda be afforded the position of "needing to know?"

And here is another question. Remember the scene that Paul describes in his Chapter "Closing Ashlawn"? Dr. Brown is sending Charles off to San Francisco and is pointing out personal things that needed to go to San Franciso too ..... so he obviously knows thats where things will be in the future. Then he and Josephine jump in the car and head for Florida. So he knew then too about the eventual move to California. All the time Linda went to Southern Sem and then Florida and then Philadelphia .... never guessing that California would be the next step? She was that out in the cold?

So is that where you went? San Francisco. Morgan has said that was one of the cities that he would be working out of as a "international security agent" I recall that Dr. Brown and Linda spent quite some time in the Bay area during that springtime, shuttling between San Francisco and Palm Springs. So were you operating then out of San Francisco. And Morgan was there too? And Linda didn't know this??????

And then following the roll that I am on. Does that mean that when Morgan "split for the coast" in February of 1967 that he was reporting ..... to you? ...... and if that was the case ...... then was Charles working for you too? So many questions and the main question maker is still on vacation! Boy will I be happy when he gets home! Elizabeth

If Mr. Twigsnapper answers Elizabeths last questions in the affirmative, then the family must have really been "on the move" from the time they left Philadelphia. Paul has talked about the Decker Labs a little bit and I am assuming that was during 1966, but suddenly in 1967 they are in California.

Now , I just finished reading Chapter 4 again " How Many Generals does it Take?" and one thing strikes me right away. And this is a question for you Paul. This Chapter reads like it is just placed there as a "touchstone". Maybe as just a device to get from one side of the story to the next? and it looks to me that you were pulling together the little bits and pieces and characters that you had at the moment. but you really didn't know about Odlums deeper involvement in all this, did you? Maybe you did, but the Chapter doesn't reflect it at all.

From the flurry of questions that have come from Elizabeth to Mr. twigsnapper I have also deduced that she didn't really know all this was happening either. She certainly didn't know that Mr. Twigsnapper was there in the desert with the family in 1967. That seems to have put a whole new slant on things.

And at the end of the Chapter there is the ENORMOUS mystery of his statement to his daughter "Its all over Sweetie" "Maybe now its time you got on with your own life." WHAT? WHAT?

and then you shift gears immediately with the simple statement "He didn't offer much more in the way of explanation. Whatever the reason the work on "The Fan" came to an abrupt halt that summer. And thats pretty much how it went with Townsend Brown, over the course of his entire life, as he tried to forge some kind of success for himself and his family from the discovery that he first made when he was just a teenager, growing up among the gentry of Zanesville, Ohio."

And Boom you are gone to another Chapter with another subject. We all just went HUH? So my question to you is, Did you really know as little about this story when you wrote this as the chapter reflects? Did Linda know so little? I guess " She needs not to know" applied to Linda for a long time then. Has she ever mentioned to you when it was that she started to consider that there was something here happening that she didn't know about? whew! grinder

YooHoo

Post by LongboardLOVELY »

Speaking of yoohoo's, does anyone remember the chocolate drink by that name? Just wondering. One of my all time childhood favorites, besides Nestle. Well, anything Chocolate would be my favorite, but I definitely had great memories assoc. with YooHoo.

Andy read me that story that you wrote, Mr. Twigsnapper, and I finally got to sit down tonight and think about how funny it would have looked to have General Le May YooHoo'ing around in a hot, sticky air force suit! 8)

Odlum

Post by grinder »

Paul,

I know that you have been busy with this latest chapter. So this observation is simply for future investigations.

I got curious about Floyd Odlum, after reading that (in the thirties) he was one of the most wealthy industrialists in the United States. I believe at one time he had a controlling interest in Convair ( As well as the Atlas Corporation which was actually a holding company through which he controlled many others.)

Now, not much at all is said about Floyd Odlums contact with Townsend Brown until 1967 or so when .... Amazingly ..... he pops up as a major player in the situation. My question is, is it possible that Mr. Odlum was somehow involved with the Caroline group? and if he was, what would have been his role during World War II ? Anybody know anything more about him? He apparently was extremely wealthy and powerful but the type to stay just under the radar, and in this particular story that is enough to throw a spotlight on his activities. grinder

Odlum/LeMay connection

Post by grinder »

I just ran across a "tidbit" that looks interesting. Paul on your last post about Boeings developments there is this statement . A quote from Barry Goldwater, I believe. I have heard it many times before and believe it to be accurate until I discover otherwise.

"Former Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater, who says he believes in UFOs because of the many military pilots who have told him of their encounters, has repeatedly said he once tried to get access to secret materials rumored to be kept there, without success. As he put it on a 1994 Larry King TV special, UFO Coverup? Live From Area 51, "I called [General] Curtis LeMay and I said, 'General, I know we have a room at Wright-Patterson where we put all this secret stuff.' I've never heard him get mad but he got madder than hell at me and said, 'Don't ever ask me that question again!'"

Now, birds of a feather they say? What about the section of this work of yours Paul where you say that Curtis LeMay himself was spending so much time at Dr. Browns lab in Santa Monica in 1967 that he actually climbed up on a stool to change a lightbulb over Lindas desk. True to her wistful and wry character I think the quote from her was something that you used . " Something like " And she wondered how many Generals it would take ..... to change that light bulb. Funny. Anyway. Why was Curtis LeMay spending so much time there? Why did they have that meeting at RAND? Actually? I have done my homework on the LeMay and RAND connection and you might as well call him the father of the place, with the AirForce and of course the CIA. So damn. What was actually happening here? And then after all of the work that Linda had done up to that point ( on what she thought was the "fan" ( later to show up as the all over the place Ionic Breeze) her father tells her that " The Project is being shut down and that she needs to " find her own life" or something like that.

And that doesn't seem terminally STRANGE? What the hell was going on? So is this when Linda stopped working for her Dad? She apparently went back during the time at Catalina but did she take her Dads advice? grinder

many questions

Post by twigsnapper »

grinder. You have posted many very good questions here. Most of which are not my place to answer. Have patience, Paul will get to them. He is keeping good notes.

Regarding the time in April of 1967 in the Indio area. I was indeed there and at the table at the Cochran-Odlum ranch during those meetings. I even was there during the luncheon that Linda quotes that she had a " General to the right of her, General to the left.

No one ever has said much about that charming lady but I need to speak up for just a moment. She made quite a lovely impression on those who were there (though I am sure that she will not think that of herself.) Such is the mark of truly amazing women. They reflect light that is shown in their direction without taking any of it inward for themselves. She had no idea who I was at the time and even now probably is straining her memory, shocked at the idea that I was in the same room at the same time (and for some reason she can not now recall who I might have been in that crowd.)

Do not let that bother you dear, whenever you may read this. That was what I did for a living. I "Blended in".

And for the rest of you. Its an interesting part of Dr. Browns life. Just remember what actually happened that spring and you will get a better look at where the power actually was.

General Curtis LeMay wouldn't go "yoohooing" across sand dunes in response to just anyones request. When you happen to see the name "LeMay" (and you will, in the future) remind yourself of that. twigsnapper

luncheon?

Post by ladygrady »

Oh, this looks substantia and interesting!

Mr. Odlum was one of those entirely invisible multimillionaires. He is definitely worth looking at pretty hard! Even during the part of time that Paul is writing about now. I am fairly certain that somewhere Floyd Odlum had some sort of hand in the war effort and I'll just bet his interests were multinational.

And Mr. Twigsnapper? You were a guest at this luncheon. So were you one of the Generals? Just thought that I would ask!

And your host at the time, didn't he own Convair at one time? And a motion picture company, RKO? grady

Odlum owned?

Post by Elizabeth Helen Drake »

When did Odlum own the United Fruit Company? because in 1954 this happened: http://www.mayaparadise.com/ufc1e.htm

"The campaign succeeded and in 1954 the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency orchestrated a coup, code-named "Operation PBSUCCESS". The invading force numbered only 150 men under the command of Castillo Armas but the CIA convinced the Guatemalan public and President Arbenz that a major invasion was underway. The CIA set up a clandestine radio station to carry propaganda, jammed all Guatemalan stations, and hired skilled American pilots to bomb strategic points in Guatemala City. The U.S. replaced the freely elected government of Guatemala with another right-wing dictatorship that would again bend to UFCO's will"

UFCO is in case you hadn't guessed .... United Fruit Company. Elizabeth

Thanks for those links, Rocky. Very interesting and not material I had seen before.
